RETOX: Yoga*Food*Attitude Healthy Solutions for Real Life
Retox Book Review
I wasn’t looking for a traditional “yoga book” when I picked up this book. I was just starting to contemplate signing up for yoga teacher training and I saw this book in the local bookstore and thought, “why not?” It looked different than the traditional yoga posture books that I normally see on the shelves. I’m glad I did! This book by Lauren Imparato was excellent. Lauren takes a different approach to yoga and not only does she discuss practical ways to incorporate yoga into your day, but she also discusses some of her favorite recipes that compliment a stress-free lifestyle.
Lauren discusses her path from a stressful 9-5 job as a Morgan Stanley Vice President to teaching yoga for free in her home to owning her own yoga studio and wellness company now. I love the way she approaches things by saying, “This is what the world says to do….This is what’s practical to do.” She provides scientific-based practices on decreasing stress and increasing wellness.
As a person who works a desk job during my day job, I have to say that the parts of the book that I appreciate the most are where she gives yoga stretches and exercises that can be done right at your desk during the workday. Her recipes have a good variety and even include quite a few vegetarian selections. (My teenage daughter is a vegetarian).
Some of the topics covered in the book include stress, migraines, hangovers, PMS, sleep deprivation, back pain, and more. This is one of those books that I purchased and actually took notes, highlighted certain parts, etc. (This is normally taboo in my book. It takes a LOT for me to write in a book).
